Donovan Mitchell’s 5th Adidas Sneaker A Dramatic Transformation

In a surprising move this summer, Donovan Mitchell introduced his fifth Adidas signature sneaker, the D.O.N. Issue 5, not on the basketball court but as a baseball cleat. The NBA star donned a special version of his own shoe fitted with studs during the MLB Celebrity Softball Game. Now, as the NBA season approaches, Adidas is ready for a full fledged release of the sneaker.

A Striking Transformation

The D.O.N. Issue 5 is a departure from its predecessors, featuring a radical redesign. The shoe, like other Adidas signature releases for the upcoming season, boasts a futuristic look with distinctive elliptic lines, breaking away from the traditional basketball sneaker design.

Jalal Enayah, Senior Footwear Designer at Adidas, explains this transformation as part of a broader shift in the brand’s mentality, aiming for excellence and a bolder approach to design.

Performance Enhancements

From a performance perspective, the D.O.N. Issue 5’s asymmetrical upper construction is tailored to support Donovan Mitchell’s dynamic lateral movements. While it continues to incorporate Lightstrike technology, the midsole’s new geometry optimizes support for Mitchell’s agile playstyle.

Debut Colorways

Adidas has unveiled three debut colorways for the D.O.N. Issue 5.

Blue Sapphire

This version, previously seen as a baseball cleat, features a striking blue color dominating the shoe with black elliptic cutouts. It will be available on October 24.

Purple Bloom

Another October 24 release, this variant mirrors the Blue Sapphire in design but features a vibrant purple color.

Black Widow:

Arriving on November 1, this colorway switches things up with most of the shoe in black and maroon elliptic cutouts, creating a bold contrast.

The D.O.N. Issue 5 represents not just a new basketball shoe but a manifestation of Adidas’s innovative spirit and its commitment to taking bold strides in the world of performance footwear.
